When anglers think of fishing in Taupo, New Zealand, they think of trout fishing in the Great Lake Taupo region. The town of Turangi, 40 minutes south of Taupo town, is known as the 'Trout Fishing Capital of New Zealand' and is a great place to base yourself for fly fishing in Taupo, New Zealand.
Running through Turangi, The Tongariro River is the largest and most important spawning river in the Great Lake Taupo fishing region, well known all over the world for its fishing quality.
Ever since Zane Grey fished the river and promoted it in his book "Tales of the Angler’s Eldorado” in the 1920s, the Tongariro River has gained a reputation as a world-class river to fish for prime rainbow and brown trout.
Each year an estimate is made of how many fish run the river to spawn and this gives an indication of the health of the fishery in the Great Lake Taupo fishing region. Appropriately, Turangi is also home to the Tongariro National Trout Centre and hatchery.
