Maori Rock Carvings

One of the best things to do in Taupo is to visit the impressive Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay that are over 10 metres high and only accessible by water. The carvings may look like the remains of an ancient Maori village but were in fact created in the late 70s by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and Jonathan Randell as a gift to Taupo.

This Taupo attraction is made up of several individual carvings that each has its own story and meaning. Find out what each piece represents. View the Maori Rock Carvings yourself by taking a relaxing scenic cruise across the lake or get up close and personal on a kayaking tour.
