Great Lake Taupo Hot Pools
Taupo is a year-round water destination. As well as lakeside activities, there are some fantastic hot pools - including thermally heated mineral pools that can be enjoyed all year round.
Taupo thermal hot pools
Taupo is blessed with several hot spots, both paid and free. A favourite with both adults and kids are the natural thermal mineral waters of Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs, set amongst some of Taupo's most stunning native bush scenery. You’ll be spoilt for choice with two thermal outdoor pools, 12 private pools, fresh water pools, a children’s warm water playground and a giant dragon hydroslide. DeBretts is a firm favourite with families and ski bunnies heading back from a day on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu.
AC Baths is perfect for kids and family as its geothermally heated pools are safe for swimming under water and dive bombs. There's also a heated indoor and outdoor pool for those who want to get a few laps in too.
If you’re looking for peace and quiet, head to Wairakei Terraces Hot Pools to take advantage of their adults-only natural thermal springs. Their pools vary in temperature and are positioned below the silica terraces and waterfall to take full advantage of the Taupo geothermal water flow that is drawn to the earth’s surface from 1500 metres underground. The beautiful surroundings and native birdsong make Wairakei Terraces the perfect spot for a night of relaxation.
A favourite amongst backpackers and anyone on a budget is the Otumuheke Stream at Spa Park. This is a free hot stream that flows into the Waikato River and creates natural hot pools. Just keep an eye on your belongings and avoid bringing any valuables. More hot spots can be found dotted along the lakefront, look out for steam or ask a local, they’ll point you in the right direction.
Turangi & Tongariro thermal hot pools
Tokaanu Thermal Pools is a great swimming spot for the whole family. Located in the tranquil thermal village of Tokaanu, the Tokaanu Thermal Pools are fed by hot mineral springs. Indulge in a relaxing therapeutic soak in either a private mineral pool or the heated freshwater outdoor pool.
Families can also head to the Genesis Turangi Aquatic Centre situated in the centre of Turangi. The indoor heated facilities include a 25 metre leisure and training pool, a 1.8m deep activity pool, a learners pool and toddler pool.
Mangakino thermal hot pools
The Mangakino Community Pool is popular with both locals and visitors. The pool is heated by solar and gas and closes during the winter months. It opens about mid October and closes around Easter (weather permitting).

It opens about mid October and closes around Easter (weather permitting). It is manned by a staff of fully qualified Lifeguards and assistants.
The natural hot springs in Spa Park are considered a hidden gem. The hot springs are made up from a hot stream that flows into the Waikato River and creates natural hot pools.
