Rainy Day Things To Do in Turangi & Tongariro
Rainy Days in Turangi:
Tokaanu Thermal Pools - If you're wondering where to head, make Tokaanu your first stop. With its thermal pools it's a great choice when the rain starts to fall, especially if you've hired a mountain bike and got a little muddy riding the newly developed Tongariro River Trail loop.
White Water Rafting - Another popular wet weather option is a white water rafting trip down the mighty Tongariro River. Turangi is home to a number of experienced rafting operators who can assure you of an amazing and beautifully scenic experience aboard one of their rafts. You're going to get wet anyway, so why not take the plunge?
Massage & Yoga - Looking for something a little more relaxing? You're in luck. Turangi now boasts several therapeutic massage and beauty options, so whether wanting a relaxing and enjoyable massage or you have issues with an ongoing injury, Turangi town centre has naturopaths and trained professionals to help. There are also yoga and pilates classes, so even on holiday you can keep up with your exercise programme.
Turangi Library - The Turangi Public Library is fantastic (even when it’s not raining) for all ages. In 2011 the library underwent a massive refurbishment and is now a pleasant place to hang out with designated reading areas, a newspaper and computer section as well as a study room.
Vertical Assault - The climbing wall located at 22 Ngawaka Place, Turangi, has a range of climbs to suit all levels, and with its café attached and internet available, it is a great family hangout.
Trout Centre - While much of the Tongariro National Trout Centre is outside, the aquarium and museum located at the working hatchery are still worth visiting even if it is raining, just bring your umbrella.
Turtle Pools - The Turtle Pools in Turangi has a 25 metre heated swimming pool, diving/bombing pool, toddler pool, aqua classes and swim club. It is open year round and there are public showers for a small cost.
Or you can relax in one of Turangi’s many cafes and restaurants and watch the world go by.
If you're still not sure what to do in Turangi try visiting the Turangi Information Centre called Turangi i-SITE.
