Rainy Days in Taupo: Indoor Activities
AC Baths – The AC Baths are our Taupo geothermal hot pools, most popular with families as the pools are safe for swimming under water and dive bombs – perfect for the kids! There is also heated indoor and outdoor lap pools for the serious swimmers.
Arts and Crafts – Several galleries are open for viewing around the region. Grab an Art and Crafts brochure from the Taupo i-SITE Visitor Centre, or just take a walk through town.
Brewery Tours - Crafty Trout Bewing Co operates tours of the first fully automated brewing system in the world. Explore and discover craft beer and cider using Alpine Volcanic water. Tours operate daily at 11am and 1pm, except Tuesdays (closed). Duration 1 - 1.5 hours depending on how interactive you want to be with the brewmaster.
Huka Honey Hive – The Honey Hive is an absolute mecca of all things bee related! Head just north of Taupo and enjoy free tastings of honey, liqueurs, mead and fruit wines at New Zealand’s biggest showcase of honey products. The kids will love learning about the amazing honeybee and viewing the live beehives, while parents can test out a wide range of honey based wellness products and skincare.
Mind Junction – A free entry interactive family fun park, perfect for the kids and adults on a rainy day! Mind Junction also has a café and plenty of paid activities on offer to tempt the children. Mind Junction is situated 10 mins north of Taupo on SH5 towards Rotorua.
6D Adventure Cinema – The 6D Adventure Cinema is a perfect wet day activity, here you get to experience some of the Lake Taupo region's best adventures all from the comfort of your special effects chair. We take HD 3D footage of the award winning local white water rafting, jetboating, skydiving and Tongariro Alpine Crossing adventures and then combine with synchronised motion, including wind and water effects to create a truly unique cinema experience. Running on the hour the 6D adventure cinema is located in Taupo at the Rafting New Zealand Adventure Centre - 47 Ruapehu St.
Lava Glass - Just north of Taupo, Lava Glass is both a café and an art gallery. They have frequent glassblowing demonstrations and handmade glass pieces for sale, and the café is known for its great food.
Taupo Museum and Art Gallery – Our local museum offers an impressive array of Maori NZ artwork and carvings and the work of contemporary local artists, alongside historical exhibitions focusing on the Lake Taupo area. Located just behind the iSITE, entry to the Taupo Museum is just a few dollars.
Taupo Indoor Climbing Wall – With 432m2 of challenging climbing area and 30 different climbing routes, Taupo’s Indoor Climbing Wall at AC Baths is sure to keep you dry for a few hours. There is also a fitness area and thermal pools onsite.
Taupo Starlight Cinema – Offering five theatres and a bar, Starlight Cinema is known locally for showing both mainstream and art house movies, with something for everyone. Check the local newspaper or phone 07 378 7515 for session times.
Shop, Wine and Dine – Taupo has many boutique shops to while away your time when the weather is wet. Have a lovely cup of coffee at one of our award winning cafes, dine in any of our lovely restaurants or have a drink with the girls or a pint with your mates at one of our pubs.
Rainy Days in Taupo: Outdoor Activities
Day Walks – The rain is no excuse not to enjoy one of the manywalks around Taupo. With a light drizzle and mist rising off the lake, rainy days in Taupo can be almost magical. Stroll the Lions Walk along the lakefront and take in the views with a coffee or walk to Huka Falls, an hour and a half return journey from Spa Park to the impressive falls at the end. Take your togs and enjoy a soak in the free natural hot springs on the way back. If you’re looking for a longer walk why not make a day of it and try the W2K from Whakaipo Bay or the K2K out at Kinloch, or climb to the summit of Mt Tauhara.
Quad Biking Taupo – Ripping around in the mud on a quad bike is an awesome Kiwi activity, even for a rainy day - it’s one of the few things that are actually more fun in the rain than not! Get ready for loads of adrenaline fanging through native bush and getting absolutely covered in mud. Taupo Quad Adventures offer some great 4WD safaris over farmland and they’ll provide you with the wet weather gear too.
Mountain Biking – The Great Lake Taupo region has some of the best mountain bike trails in the world with tracks ranging from gentle to heart pumping. The free draining pumice soils provide true all weather riding, even in the rain there is very little mud on the track.
Huka Prawn Park – Home to the famous “Shawn the Prawn”, this is New Zealand’s only prawn park. A huge hit with families, the park’s activities include Shawn’s Walk, covered prawn fishing and Killer Prawn Golf. Dine in Taupo’s only riverside restaurant and enjoy the locally famous Seafood Chowder.
Huka Falls River Cruise – This purpose built riverboat cruises the Waikato River from the Aratiatia Dam to the Huka Falls. Experience the impressive Huka Falls from the water while staying warm and dry aboard the Maid of the Falls. Call to book on 0800 278 336.
Hot Pools – Warm & natural thermal waters are home to several Taupo hot pools. Soak your worries away in one of Great Lake Taupo’s free or commercial thermal mineral pools.
Trout Fishing – Lake Taupo is world-famous for trout fishing. A Taupo fishing charter will take care of your licence and supply the gear, just stroll down to the harbour booking office and pick your trip!
Cruise to the famous Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings and around the picturesque bays of Lake Taupo. A full commentary is given on the volcanic history and Maori mythology surrounding Lake Taupo. Great for families and those who want comfort on the water
