Hunting in Great Lake Taupo

Hunting in the Great Lake Taupo region is a very popular activity.

Hunting is a popular activity within the region

The local population of Sika deer is the largest free range herd of Sika found outside of Asia, and is hugely valued by hunters who seek to test themselves against these wily deer. The thrill of chasing stags during the rutting season draws hunters from all around the world to Taupo, and we have world class guides and hunting lodges who can show you the experience and trophy of a lifetime!

Much of the hunting around Great Lake Taupo is around the Kaweka and Kaimanawa Forest ranges to the east of the lake. The secretive Sika has established a world-renowned population which is a magnet to hunters all year round. These beautiful and rugged mountain ranges provide an epic backdrop to the lake, as well as an adventure playground to those who aren’t faint of heart!

To the west are the dark and brooding hills of the Pureora Forest, in which the red deer is the undisputed king! Known for its large stags, the Pureora Forest offers awesome free range bush hunting on public land for those who are well prepared to get off the beaten path.

There are other Taupo hunting opportunities in the region as well, with goats, ducks, pigs and pheasants all posing a challenge for the adventurous traveller.
