Two (2) Day Weekend - Leisurely Break in Turangi Tongariro

Day One

Tongariro River Trail

Arrive in Turangi mid morning. If you're wondering what to do in Turangi hire a bike from Tongariro River Rafting and bike the 14km Tongariro River Trail. Visit the Tongariro National Trout Centre and see the hatchery and the underwater viewing chamber.

Back in Turangi township enjoy lunch at one of the cafes.

You can’t visit the “Trout Fishing Capital” of New Zealand without spending an afternoon testing your skills at one of the best Turangi attractions - fly fishing on the Tongariro River. If this is not your thing you can charter a boat – just ask the Turangi i-SITE staff for some recommendations.

Day Two

Head south over the saddle on SH47 and stop at Lake Rotopounamu for another great Turangi activity – a 30 minute walk down to the lake or 2 hours around the loop track. This beautiful lake is a favorite with tree lovers and bird watchers.

Chateau Tongariro

If you don't want to stay in a Tongariro holiday park continue on SH47 turning left on to SH48 where you will find the Chateau Tongariro Hotel in Whakapapa Village. Relax in the elegant and timeless Ruapehu Lounge over an indulgent Chateau High Tea – luxury!

Adjacent to the Chateau Tongariro Hotel you will find the Department of Conservation, full of information about the Tongariro National Park including audio visuals detailing the parks history and features and exhibits on the three volcanoes, Maori mythology, the flora and fauna.

Take one of the short walks in this area to experience the volcanic nature of this area.

Drive further up SH48, the Bruce Road and take a scenic ride on a chairlift with Ruapehu Alpines Lifts as they take you to New Zealand’s highest café. Over a coffee at Knoll Ridge café you can see what the skiers and snowboarders are doing and take in spectacular views.
