Things to do in Taupo - Kicking Back for Five (5) Days

Day One

Maori Rock Carvings

Need a little exercise after the drive? – Head to Spa Park for an invigorating walk to the Huka Falls, and on the way back enjoy a Taupo spa with a relaxing soak in a natural hot pool at the Otumuheke Stream.

Enjoy a leisurely afternoon on Lake Taupo cruising in style and comfort around the northern bays to the modern Maori Rock Carvings on board the Chris Jolly Cruise Cat – coffee and a muffin provided.

Check into the Millenium Hotel and Resort Manuels Taupo with its lake edge location, sit back and relax for the remainder of the day taking in the magnificent lake and mountain views.

Day Two

Tongariro National Park

Wake up early and drive to Mt Ruapehu. In the summer take scenic chairlift ride with Ruapehu Alpine Lifts or walk up to the crater Lake. In winter go skiing or snowboarding on the Whakapapa skifield, learner or refresher packages are available.


Get up early to experience the magic of the Tongariro region  - take up the challenge of a guided Tongariro Alpine Crossing Hike with Adrift Outdoors; they will collect you from your accommodation too.

Day Three

After enjoying brunch at one of our fantastic cafes and some retail therapy in the Taupo town centre, build up to an adrenalin afternoon by visiting the Taupo activity, 4D Cinema Rafting Adventure at White Water World right in town – experience the thrill of white water rafting from the comfort of your special effects chair.

Taupo Bungy

Start the afternoon with a leap off the 47m high platform above the scenic Waikato River with Taupo Bungy, solo or tandem... your choice. Or you would prefer the Cliff Hanger Swing…?

Then it is out to the airport to experience a 12,000ft or 15,000ft skydive, freefalling at 200km an hour with Taupo Tandem Skydive or Skydive Taupo.

Want a more leisurely afternoon? Purchase a fun pass at the Huka Prawn Park and enjoy a delicious lunch by the Waikato River in their Riverside restaurant and Bar. Finish the afternoon with a visit to Orakei Korako, a hidden thermal valley of colour, hot springs, geysers and natural beauty.

Day Four

Great Lake Trail

Head out this morning to the Great Lake Trail on the western shores of the lake – stunning views and bike trips for all levels of experience. Great Lake Shuttles can hire you a bike and provide drop off and pick up options or use Chris Jolly’s launch “Bay2Bay”. Or you can hire a bike in town and bike out along the Waikato River and up to Huka Falls and over to the Craters of the Moon area.

Spend a relaxing afternoon visiting the Waipahihi Botanical Gardens and the beautiful sculptures in and around Taupo, maps can be found at the Taupo i-SITE, 30 Tongariro Street, Taupo.

Day Five

Geothermal Activity

Awake early and after a full breakfast be on the road by 9.00am heading north 50km to Wai-O-Tapu, the thermal wonderland. See the power of the Lady Knox Geyser erupting at 10.15am before visiting the thermal park of sinter terraces, colourful springs, bubbling water and plopping mud. Feeling hungry again - The Geyser Café has much to tempt the taste buds before your journey home.
