Tongariro Alpine Traverse

The Tongariro Alpine Traverse is a full day self guided hike that traverses the Tongariro National Park from the extreme eastern boundry to the heart of the park at Whakapapa Village.

Passing between the peaks of Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom) and Mt Ruapehu as they look down upon you.

Take a hike through Mordor from “The Lord of the Rings”.  Visit the historic Waihohonu hut.  Take in the breathtaking scenery of old volcanic craters now forming the Tama Lakes. Pass by the thundering Taranaki Falls that cascades over an old lava flow into an ice cold mountain pool, take a plunge if you dare.

At the end of the hike, if time permits, visit the Whakapapa Village Visitors Centre to see the history of the park, or take a well deserved break in the local tavern.

The Tongariro Alpine Traverse hike is 20km of easy terrain with no steep or dangerous ascents or decents.  It is considered moderate grade for it’s length and easy grade for it’s terrain.

This area of the park is less exposed to severe weather, avalanche or ice risks experienced at higher altitudes. No guide required.
