Great Lake Taupo Geothermal Attractions
Exploring the vast thermal and volcanic landscape comes with choice, via foot, bike, horse back, boat or for the thrill seeker, a scenic flight. Fortunately many of these natural gems lay just a stones throw from the Taupo town centre making them easily accessible.
Here are a few geothermal attractions within the Great Lake Taupo region.
Orakei Korako is a 25 minute drive north of Taupo and has been named by Lonely Planet as ‘possibly the best thermal area left in New Zealand and one of the finest in the world'. Take a walk around the Hidden Valley and see silica terraces, boiling pools, geysers and an incredibly rare geothermal cave. Orakei Korako is thousands of years old - you can almost taste the history.
Wairakei Terraces also has a thermal walkway and if you really want to dive into some Maori culture, they offer intimate hangi nights set against the natural backdrop of their amazing volcanic area. They also have hot pools and spa massage facilities if you’re up for a bit of indulgence.
Craters of the Moon is mostly known for its incredible mountain biking but they also have a leisurely geothermal walk around the thermal area. With plenty of steam vents and boiling mud pools it’s easy to feel as though you are walking on the surface of the moon. The walk is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all abilities.
Wairakei Natural Thermal Valley offers a 30 minute thermal walk. It's only a few dollars and is a nice easy way to experience some volcanic activity up close and personal. Pay for a bag of food and feed the animals on your way around too.
Volcanic Activity Centre is where you can learn about the wonders and mysteries of the Taupo Volcanic Zone which stretches from Mt Ruapehu in the central plateau to White Island in the Bay of Plenty. It's a great fun and educational experience, especially for the kids, and also a fantastic rainy day option.
Tokaanu Thermal Walk is located at the southern end of the lake in a small village of Tokaanu, near to Turangi. The 15-20 minute thermal bush walk features bubbling mud and silica springs which is wheelchair accessible and free to explore. The walk is located right next to the Tokaanu Thermal Pools.
No visit to the region is complete without a relaxing soak in one of the natural thermal hot pools dotted around the area. Whether you’re resting weary legs after a day exploring or just looking for the perfect way to unwind, you will definitely enjoy a relaxing soak in the soothing warm geothermal water.
