Water Activities in Turangi
Turangi’s great location on the southern shores of Lake Taupo means people can enjoy recreational water activities year round.
With many lakeside settlements having a permanent population as well as regular holiday makers who base themselves in Turangi, everyone benefits from the closeness to the water with boating, fishing, kayaking, sailing, waterskiing and jetskiing being the main activities.
Paddleboarding is also proving a popular past time for many and during the summer months at Motuoapa there is an operator who hires boards and kayaks. There is a yacht club based near Motuoapa with a loyal following, as well as a fishing club which hosts a very popular fishing competition every year.
There are three companies who hire kayaks in the summer – they are located at Motuoapa, Tokaanu and Kuratau.
A long-time Turangi attraction is the Tokaanu Wharf. The marina is a great place to take the kids spin fishing year round.
As well as the lake, Turangi is located right on the Tongariro River and proves a great place to base yourself as there are so many things to do in Turangi such as fishing, white water rafting and kayaking.
There are two whitewater rafting companies based in Turangi. Both offer a fun-filled grade three trip on the beautiful Tongariro River. The trip is fantastic year round and is a great alternative if people have come to Turangi to snow ski or walk in the Tongariro National Park and the weather is not suitable. The operators also provide family float trips on the grade two section of the river, suitable for parents with children aged three to ten years. Grade two guided whitewater kayaking is available during the summer months.
Fishermen have the advantage of being able to choose fishing on the lake one day and the river the next. With many guides available to teach people to flyfish there is no excuse not to give it a go. There are three commercial boat operators on the southern end of the lake at the Tokaanu Marina who can take people fishing.
For people with their own boat it is popular to fish at Lake Rotoaira or Lake Otamangakau, but there is a limited fishing season on these lakes. You need a Taupo fishing licence as well as a separate licence to fish on them. These lakes are a short twenty minute drive from Turangi heading toward Tongariro National Park. The Rotoaira licences are available from the Turangi i-Site and are not expensive.
In Tokaanu there are the more relaxing Thermal Mineral Pools, with the public heated pool being a beautifully warm 38 degrees. There is also a toddler pool. The private thermal pools enjoy temperatures from 39 degrees to the very hot 41 degrees, perfect to soothe away all aches and pains.
Turangi also has the Turtle Pools. There is a main 25 metre lap pool, a diving pool and a toddler pool. Visitors are welcome to join the regular activities on offer such as water aerobics. During the holidays the staff bring out the huge inflatable obstacle course, popular with all the kids.
Whether you want an action packed watersports experience or just want to hang out in a boat with the waves lapping at the sides while you drop a line, all the while taking in the magnificent views at the southern end of the lake, Turangi is the best place to base yourself during both summer and winter.
