Taupo Parks, Reserves & Public Spaces
You don’t have to walk far in Taupo’s town centre to find a park, reserve or public space to enjoy. There are grassed reserves where you can relax in the sunshine, read a book or just watch the world go by and there are spaces in the Taupo town centre where you’ll often find art on display, sculptures to view and buskers to keep you entertained.
Riverside Park and the Amphitheatre are located north of the Taupo town centre next to the beginnings of the Waikato River. These can be accessed from Redoubt Street. The park is home to Taupo's Saturday Riverside Market, and the Amphitheatre hosts many concerts and events during the year including the massive Taupo Summer Concert which includes major international acts.
Heu Heu Street
Heu Heu Street in Taupo’s town centre is a lively hub and busy shopping precinct. You will often see buskers here and the street is a site for town centre festivals held throughout the year.
The laneways in the town centre, between the main shopping streets of Heu Heu Street, Horomatangi Street and Tamamutu Street are full of exciting boutique shops, street art and occasionally buskers. Suncourt Shopping Centre also has several popular cafes to choose from.
Colonel Roberts Reserve
Colonel Roberts Reserve is a popular place to sit and enjoy a picnic and take in the views across the lake to the mountains of Tongariro National Park. It is also home to Art in the Park, a weekend art market and occasional events such as the Fuse Circus.
The Gascoigne Street Reserve is a grassed public area. Within the reserve is the Settlers’ Cemetery where a number of Taupo’s early settlers are buried.
This reserve, situated on Lake Terrace, is next to Taupo Mini Golf. The reserve is often used for visiting attractions such as the ice rink, segways and school holiday activities.
Lakefront Reserve/Lions Walk
The Lions Walk, which follows the shores of Lake Taupo past the town centre, is a beautiful place to enjoy a walk, jog or bike ride. The views are truly spectacular so take your camera.
Taupo Boat Harbour
Taupo’s Boat Harbour is a picturesque place to visit and view the origins of the Waikato River.
The harbour is also the base for many lake operators offering scenic cruises, fishing boat charters, sailing boat charters and scenic flights with the float plane operations.
Playgrounds within Taupo’s town centre are located on the Tongariro South Domain and on the reserve on Horomatangi St behind Taupo Primary School.
