Taupo Tops Tourism
Great Lake Taupo has been announced as the ‘Best New Zealand Destination’ in the 19th annual Golden Backpack Awards. Other finalists included last year’s winner, Queenstown, as well as Abel Tasman National Park, Auckland, Bay of Islands and Rotorua.
Lake Taupo, New Zealand - November 11, 2014 - The Taupō region has triumphed in a variety of tourism awards in New Zealand and across the Tasman.
Last week, Great Lake Taupo was announced as ‘Best New Zealand Destination’ in the 19th annual Golden Backpack Awards. Other finalists included last year’s winner, Queenstown, as well as Abel Tasman National Park, Auckland, Bay of Islands and Rotorua.
The Golden Backpack Awards are Australia and New Zealand’s only dedicated awards program for the independent travel sector. Award winners are determined using a combination of voting by thousands of TNT Magazine readers (print and online) and a panel of secret shoppers.
Kevin Ellis, Managing Director of TNT Magazine publisher, Startrack Media, said the awards hold special significance for winners.
"It is fantastic to see an up-and-coming region like Great Lake Taupo scoop a premier award like this. It will undoubtedly give them the opportunity to reach more people with a stronger message,” he says.
A full list of the 2014 Golden Backpack winners can be found on www.goldenbackpackawards.com.au.
Also last week, two Taupō region tourism operators were victorious in the national Kiwi Experience Awards of Excellence. Skydive Taupo won ‘Activity of the Year’ – the program’s premier award – with a score of 4.88 out of 5, calculated from customer survey responses gathered across the entire year.
The ‘People’s Choice Activity of the Year’ was won by Tongariro Expeditions, which was chosen through a customer survey using Kiwi Experience’s social media channels.
Liz Lindsay, Sales and Marketing Manager for Tourism Holdings, which owns Kiwi Experience, says activities and accommodation are a key part the company’s ability to provide legendary experiences for its passengers. “We’re delighted to celebrate the great work of key partners such as Skydive Taupo and Tongariro Expeditions.”
Last month, international travel website Wotif announced Lake Taupō Top 10 Holiday Resort as the top-ranked holiday park in New Zealand according to reviews provided by Wotif customers.
General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupō, Vanessa Freeman, says the awards demonstrate the quality of product the region delivers to both international and domestic visitors.
“The recognition is a credit to the hard work our tourism operators put in 365 days of the year,” says Ms Freeman. “With tourism being worth $400 million to this region, it is a significant industry that delivers both dollars and jobs for Great Lake Taupo.”
