Taupo Receives Road Cycling Award

Taupo’s Mayor, David Trewavas, was presented with the region’s ‘NZ’s Favourite On Road Ride’ award on Friday by Dougal List, National Cycling Manager for the NZTA.

Lake Taupo, New Zealand – 22 April, 2016  –  The award was presented after Taupo came out on top in the road-riding category of Bike Wise’s national competition to find ‘NZ’s Favourite Places to Cycle’. While the Otago Central Rail Trail was the highest ranking cycle trail overall by receiving the most votes, Taupo was the only region to have a trail as a finalist in every category of the competition.

“We are really pleased to be named New Zealand’s best road cycling destination, but we are also celebrating the fact that we have more trails worthy of being finalists in this competition than any other region. This really seals our reputation as an all-round cycling destination,” said Zelia Horrell, Sales and Marketing Manager for Destination Great Lake Taupo.

The On Road category win is a fitting one, with the region’s well-known Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge celebrating its upcoming 40th anniversary in November this year. “This event has contributed greatly to the popularity of road cycling in our region, and this popularity is likely to continue with the increase in cycle tourism we are seeing globally,” said Horrell.

Nearly 10,000 votes were received in this year’s Bike Wise competition, held in February each year to celebrate Bike Wise Month.
