Taupo’s Great Lake Walkway Named NZ’s Best Urban Ride

Taupo’s Great Lake Walkway, also known as the Lion’s Walk, has won the Urban Ride category of the NZ Transport Agency’s Favourite Places to Ride competition.

Great Lake Walkway, Taupo

The shared cycling and walking path, following the shores of Lake Taupo from the town centre to Five Mile Bay, competed against 24 other rides to be named New Zealand’s best urban ride.

“We are thrilled that our lakefront trail has gained national recognition,” said Damian Coutts, General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupo.

“People love the lake and mountain scenery showcased by the trail, and the fact that they can ride from Taupo’s town centre all the way to Five Mile Bay. The trail connects the town to our beautiful lakefront.”

Coutts said they are also celebrating being the only region with a trail or cycling facility in the top three of every category of the competition.

“The results show that Great Lake Taupo really is an all-round cycling destination. We have every type of trail – adventure trails, mountain bike and jump parks, and urban trails.”

Great Lake Taupo’s huge range of cycling trails and facilities are largely thanks to its cycling-focused community. Kids Bike Taupo, a programme aimed at getting more kids on bikes, placed second in the competition’s Community Facility category.

Taupo District Mayor David Trewavas said it was pleasing to see their investment paying off. “Council worked with local groups 30 years ago to begin building the first section of the Great Lake Walkway, and with recent extensions it’s great to see it’s now being recognised as the best urban ride in the country. It’s a real asset to our community.”

Mr Trewavas also wanted to thank everyone who voted. “We would like to acknowledge all of our supporters who voted for our trails. Their votes are also recognition for the groups who have worked so hard to build and maintain the world-class trails and cycling opportunities in this region.”
