Great Lake Taupo Showcased to the World

The Great Lake Taupo region was showcased to the world this week at New Zealand’s biggest annual international tourism event, TRENZ.

Lake Taupo, New Zealand – May 25, 2015

Taupo District and Rotorua District Councillors visit TRENZ on Monday.

TRENZ is the New Zealand tourism industry’s premium international trade event, bringing together hundreds of international tourism and travel buyers to negotiate new business deals with several hundred leading New Zealand tourism operators.

TRENZ also features a substantial international and domestic media programme, promoting New Zealand as a visitor destination as well as the economic importance of the country’s tourism industry.

The Destination Great Lake Taupo (DGLT) team, led by new General Manager Damian Coutts, spoke to over 100 international media and tourism buyers at the event, which was this year held at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre. DGLT partnered with Rotorua and six other Central North Island Regional Tourism Organisations as official hosts of the 2015 event.

Mr Coutts said during the three days people were able to make appointments with the DGLT team to see exactly what ‘Nature’s Ultimate Playground’ has on offer.

TRENZ provided a fantastic opportunity to promote the region’s tourism operators and accommodation providers. Five local operators exhibited alongside DGLT in the Great Lake Taupo stand, including Chris Jolly Outdoors, both the district’s sky diving operations, Tongariro Lodge and Taupo Bungy. A number of other Great Lake Taupo operators also attended as part of national displays.

Outside of the official appointments, more that 120 agents, buyers and international media took the opportunity to visit the region as part organized TRENZ famils, with the last guests departing last night.

“The feedback we received was extremely positive and I have no doubt these people will be returning to their part of the world singing our praises and encouraging people to come here,” said Mr Coutts.

“As a district we had an incredible summer from a tourism perspective, and I am sure that will continue for some time to come.”

The close proximity of the event also gave Mayor David Trewavas and several councillors an opportunity to tour the event.

“It was an amazing event and the DGLT team did a fantastic job in putting our best foot forward,” Mr Trewavas said.

At the media briefings on Wednesday it was announced that the next TRENZ event, to be held in May 2016, will also be hosted in Rotorua. This comes as great news to the DGLT team and the wider Great Lake Taupo tourism industry.
