Great Lake Taupo is NZ’s Favourite Road Cycling Destination

For the second year running, the Great Lake Taupo region has been named New Zealand’s Favourite On Road Place to Cycle.

Lake Taupo, New Zealand – March 3, 2016

The region competed against four others to win the top road cycling award in Bike Wise’s NZ’s Favourite Places to Cycle competition.

In addition to the On Road category win, Great Lake Taupo was also the only region with a trail as a finalist in every category of the competition, tagging it as the ultimate cycling destination for its variety and scope of riding.

“We are really thrilled to be named New Zealand’s best road cycling destination,” said Damian Coutts, General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupo, “and we are also celebrating the fact that we have more trails worthy of being finalists than any other region. The stunning Great Lake Trail is one of those trails that deserves recognition. Next year we have our sights set on the Great Lake Trail winning the competition as it is fast becoming known as the best cycle trail in the North Island.”

The On Road category win is a fitting one, with the region hosting two of New Zealand’s biggest road cycling events. The NZ Ironman, which includes a 180km road cycle leg, will take place in Taupo this weekend for the 17th consecutive year and the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge will celebrate its 40th anniversary in November 2016.

Mr Coutts wanted to thank everyone who voted. “We would like to acknowledge all of our supporters who voted for our trails. Their votes are also recognition for Bike Taupo who have worked so hard to build and maintain them.”

Rowan Sapsford, Chair of Bike Taupo, said “It’s great to see Taupo being recognised as a comprehensive riding destination for all types of biking. We have big plans for the future that will help see our region continue to come out on top in this competition.”

Nearly 10,000 votes were received in this year’s Bike Wise competition, held in February each year to celebrate Bike Wise Month.
