Turangi, Trout Fishing Capital of the World

The Tongariro River has gained a reputation as a world- class river for prime rainbow and brown trout fishing.

Fly fishing on the Tongariro River, Turangi

Nearby, where the Tongariro River meets Lake Taupo, is the township of Turangi (45 minutes south of Taupo town) known as the ‘Trout Fishing Capital of New Zealand’. Turangi is a great place to base yourself to experience the best that New Zealand trout and fly fishing has to offer. Turangi is also home to the Tongariro National Trout Centre and hatchery – a great outing for the whole family.

Fishing on Lake Taupo is also fantastic. A private or group fishing charter from Taupo is an excellent way to try your luck. Catch your very own prime rainbow or brown trout, and most lake operators will prepare your catch sashimi style or cook onboard. Trout cannot be bought or sold commercially in New Zealand, however some restaurants in Taupo will happily cook your catch for you (we recommend booking in advance and they will need to sight your fishing license).

Fishing for trout requires a license – available online at www.doc.govt.nz or from Taupo i-SITE and Turangi i-SITE. There is a three fish limit per person per day with a minimum fish size of 40 cm. Fishing gear can be hired. Check at the local i-SITE for a list of retailers.
