Whirinaki Track

Tackling the Whirinaki Track, 24km in seven hours with the Taupo Tramping Club was a challenge that offered peace and tranquillity as it is an excellent track through the best native forest in the Central North Island.

Whirinaki Forest

From Plateau Road it was virtually all downhill to pass the Cave in one hour and to have “smoko” at the Central Hut in two-and-a-half.

Lunch was had in a sunny, grassy glade just before the Department of Conservation shelter at Vern’s Camp – good protection from the weather with a wood-burning stove for a warm picnic lunch on really cold days.

The track improved from here northwards, just as well as one walker twisted a knee, as it passed through magical areas with large tree ferns and awe inspiring giants of the forest then over the deep gorge of the Te Whaiti Nui A Toi Canyon to emerge at the car park on River Road.
