Historic Kinloch station was developed as a sheep and cattle station in the early 1950s from part of an original block of 2,470 hectares. The privately owned 930 ha farm was sold to Japanese interests in 1991 and continued to operate as a working farm running sheep, cattle, deer and goats.

In the mid 1990s the farm was subdivided into lifestyle farm blocks with provision for an international golf course development overlooking Kinloch and Lake Taupo on the remaining block. The original Kinloch Station homestead, which remains in private ownership, is set in 24 acres of mature, landscaped grounds overlooking Lake Taupo and the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus golf course.

The settlement of Kinloch is the gateway to Lake Taupos western bays renowned for trout fishing, stunning scenery and natural beach picnic areas.

In recent years walking and biking trails in native bush alongside the lake have also been developed.
