Ski Mount Ruapehu - Ski Area Information

Mount Ruapehu, home to Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas, boasts brilliant skiing, snowboarding and sledding. Whakapapa Ski Area is New Zealand's largest ski area and Turoa boasts the longest vertical drop in Australasia. Both ski areas are located within the Tongariro National Park, a Dual World Heritage Area, and have the highest lift accessed terrain in New Zealand.

Whakapapa, Turoa & Tukino Ski Areas

Whakapapa and Turoa have a combined area of 1050 hectares, the largest area dedicated to commercial skiing and snowboarding in New Zealand. There is an excellent variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiers and snowboarders, as well as dedicated areas for sledding, tobogganing and tubing.

You can also try Tukino Ski Field, Mount Ruapehu's lesser-known gem, located on the eastern side of the mountain. Tukino Ski Field offers the rare combination of adventure minus the crowds. Tukino is a club field, operated and maintained by club members.

Everything you need to have a great day on the mountain is available in Turangi or Taupo, including ski and snowboard rental and tuning, outdoor clothing retailers (and rental), ski packages including lessons, transport to the ski areas and of course a wide range of accommodation options.

The Great Lake Taupo region is the perfect place to base yourself if you are planning to ski or snowboard during your holiday or weekend away. Taupo is just over an hour's drive from Whakapapa Ski Area and two hours drive from Turoa Ski Area. Turangi is just 40 minutes drive from Whakapapa and just over an hour's drive from Turoa.

A real benefit of staying in Taupo or Turangi is the access to exciting off mountain activities. If the weather up the mountain is less than ideal or your legs need a rest from skiing and snowboarding, you'll find plenty to do in the lowlands!

Mount Ruapehu is a special mountain, both in its uniqueness and in the sheer quality of the skiing and snowboarding terrain. It only takes one visit to Mount Ruapehu to become hooked on the North Island snow season - the space and freedom, awe-inspiring scenery and friendly people you’ll encounter make it an experience you will never forget.

If you’re an absolute skiing or snowboarding beginner you’re up for some fun times in the snow at New Zealand's largest beginner area, Happy Valley. If you’re a seasoned pro, Mount Ruapehu has all the challenges you'll want with plenty of black and double black diamond runs and off-piste backcountry areas.
