Great Lake Trail Tour Packages

This itinerary takes in the Great Lake Trail as well as allowing a rest day in between the two days of riding to experience other activities in the area. Riders stay at Whakaipo Lodge, a luxury lodge situated just a kilometre from Whakaipo Bay and the W2K section of the Great Lake Trail. You can choose to make your trip as short or as long as you like.

The Great Lake Trail, skirting the western shores of Lake Taupo, is the jewel in the crown of the Central North Island’s mountain biking trails. It takes you on a 74 kilometre journey along purpose built, flowing trails through native bush to some of the most remote areas surrounding New Zealand’s largest lake.

The trail offers spectacular views across Lake Taupo to the mountains of Tongariro National Park, and the peace and tranquility you will experience creates unforgettable memories.

Day One 

Whakaipo Lodge


4.00pm: Arrive at Whakaipo Lodge, your private and tranquil luxury accommodation located close to the Great Lake Trail. Hosts Garth and Angie London will greet you and show you to your luxury suite.

6.00pm: Complimentary canapes and a wine or beer at Whakaipo Lodge.

7.00pm: Gourmet dinner, including wine, at Whakaipo Lodge, made with fresh local and lodge-grown produce.

 

Day Two

Ride Waihaha and Waihora Sections of the Great Lake Trail

Distance: 32km

 

Admire the spectacular landscape along the Waihaha & Waihora section


8.30am: Depart Whakaipo Lodge for the Waihaha trail start. Shuttle service provided by Adventure Shuttles.

9.30am: Ride Waihaha River Bridge to the end of Waihaha Road, passing through beautiful native bush and past stunning waterfalls and lookouts before merging with the Waihora Trail.

Continue riding on the Waihora trail. This trail has incredible views out over the crystal blue waters of Lake Taupo to the mountains beyond. Photo opportunites abound.

12.00pm: Lunch at the lake lookout of the Waihora trail.

3.00pm: Arrive at the picturesque Kotukutuku Bay and depart on the Bay 2 Bay water taxi for Kinloch.

3.45pm: Arrive in Kinloch, where you will be met by Garth and Angie’s Adventure Shuttles service which will take you back to Whakaipo Lodge.

6.00pm: Complimentary canapes and a wine or beer at Whakaipo Lodge.

7.00pm: Dinner at the award winning Brantry restaurant, who serve contemporary New Zealand cuisine reflecting fresh seasonal fare. Dine in the intimacy of the cellar or alfresco in the garden.

Day Three

Enjoy a scenic lake cruise on Chris Jolly Outdoors


9.30am: Scenic Lake Cruise and Fishing with Chris Jolly Outdoors

A short scenic drive to the Taupo town centre, and down to the Boat Harbour, where you will meet with Chris Jolly Outdoors. You will join a relaxing private charter cruise around the picturesque bays of Lake Taupo to view the fascinating Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay.

Your expert skipper/guide will find the best fishing spots and show you how to catch a trout. Enjoy a full commentary on the volcanic history and Maori mythology surrounding Lake Taupo.

12.30pm: Lunch at Eruption Café, one of Taupo’s bike-friendly cafes.

2.00pm: Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa

Soak your muscle aches away in the thermal bathing pools set beneath the silica terraces in a beautiful natural setting. The silica and minerals in the water are conducive to healing, with temperatures between 38 – 42 degrees. Your hot soak will be followed up with a massage using indigenous herbal oils and balms.

6.00pm: Complimentary canapes and a wine or beer at Whakaipo Lodge.

7.00pm: Drive into Taupo for dinner at The Bistro, a well known Taupo restaurant providing European style dining in tune with the seasons. Fresh local produce and simple clean flavours are features of The Bistro’s menu.

Day Four

Ride Orakau, K2K and W2K sections of the Great Lake Trail

Distance: 33km

 

More amazing scenery to be enjoyed along the trail


8.30am: Depart Whakaipo Lodge for the start of the Orakau trail. Shuttle service provided by Adventure Shuttles.

9.15am: Ride from Whangamata Road down to Kawakawa Bay, past a beautiful native wetland full of bird life, before emerging at the pretty and secluded Kawakawa Bay.

10.30am: Drink and snack on the beach at Kawakawa Bay before continuing on the K2K section of trail to Kinloch.

11.00am: Ride over the K2K trail to the village of Kinloch. You will take in sweeping views across the lake before tackling a fast and flowing descent all the way down to Kinloch.

12.30pm: Lunch at the Tipsy Trout in Kinloch.

 

Those who want a shorter ride will have the option of finishing the ride here and being picked up by Adventure Shuttles. Garth will take you back to Whakaipo Lodge where you can either spend a relaxing afternoon or you could drive into Taupo’s town centre for some boutique shopping.

 

A short break along the W2K trail


2.00pm: Ride over the W2K trail to Whakaipo Bay. This trail ascends gently to the headland where fit riders may like to ride the additional Headland Loop (9km) before ascending once again on a fast and flowing descent to Whakaipo Bay.

This trail also offers stunning scenery and takes you through native bush on your journey to the end of the trail.

At Whakaipo Bay, if the weather is warm enough, you can cool yourself off with a swim in the lake. This is a popular swimming and boating spot with locals.

4.00pm: Ride from Whakaipo Bay reserve along Mapara Road for 1km and back toWhakaipo Lodge.

6.00pm: Complimentary canapes and a wine or beer at Whakaipo Lodge.

7.00pm: Dinner at Bistro Lago. Located at the stunning Hilton Lake Taupo, Bistro Lago is one of Taupo’s premier dining destinations. With a high quality menu and an excellent wine list, your experience here is sure to be unforgettable.
