The Great Lake Taupo region is home to two of the biggest biking events on the annual cycling calendar - the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, which attracts 10,000 + participants riding 160km round the lake, and the 12 hour Taupo Day Night Thriller which attracts 3,000 mountain bikers.

Tongariro National Park was the first place in the world to be listed as a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site for its landscape and cultural values. There are only a few places in the world that have dual UNESCO World Heritage status.
