Making Phone Calls in Great Lake Taupo

Taupo district local calls are free to make from a residential land line. National calls are made by dialing the telephone number preceded by one of the following area codes:

  • 09 – Auckland and Northland
  • 07 – Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Coromandel Peninsula and Central Plateau (including Taupo)
  • 06 – East Coast, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Taranaki, Wairarapa
  • 04 – Wellington, Kapiti, Hutt Valley
  • 03 – South Island

For international calls, dial 00 + country code (eg. 00 44 for Britain) followed by the telephone number. Note that calling overseas during business hours is very expensive.

Many New Zealand telephone companies offer capped national or international calling rates at weekends. It’s therefore worth asking a friendly kiwi in the Taupo area if you can use their home phone so you can talk for hours for just a few dollars.

It’s probably worth buying a pre-pay mobile phone (especially if you’re going to remote places) and selling it on to someone else when you leave NZ.
