Taupo, Turangi & Tongariro White Water Rafting
The Tongariro river is known as the perfect river for your first rafting experience. It’s the exciting, wet, wild adventure that the brave adventurer must do. Float past ancient beech forests, through gorges, past limestone and volcanic cliffs and then race down 50m 'roller coaster' rapids at exhilarating speeds.
The white water rafting experience is diverse - from a peaceful drifting trip on the Tongariro, to the white water of the Mohaka. There’s plenty on offer for the adventure seeker who needs the thrill of blasting down endless rapids at a romping pace. Many tour operators in the region offer day trips or even overnight camping adventures. Try your white water adventure with a tour guide, instruction, equipment and refreshments - a great way to see wilderness country inaccessible by road.

The Access 14 or Tree Trunk Gorge rafting trip is the hardest of the three rafted sections of the Tongariro, with steep grade 4 rapids coming at you fast and furious. You are on the river for about 1 and 1/4 hours with the native bush spilling out onto the river margins in many spots.
The rapid names, like Mother-in-law's Nightmare (The Bitch), Oppat's Ordeal, General Disaster and Kirkham's Mistake, speak of the common disasters that used to occur regularly on this run through the 80’s by kayakers and rafters alike.
