Lake Taupo Thermal Volcanic Attractions

Taupo Volcanoes, Geysers, Mud Pools & Hot Pools

 Orakei Korako
Discover the hidden valley of Orakei Korako

The Lake Taupo region is part of the Taupo Volcano Zone and Thermal Explorer Highway. Lake Taupo's volcano wonderland stretches from White Island through Rotorua to the Tongariro National Park.

We have three impressive active volcanoes, one which also happens to be a movie star. And not just the volcanoes themselves, there's also a whole lot going on around the Taupo region that you can have a look at. You’ll see spectacular steaming cliffs, geysers, boiling lakes, bubbling mud pools and floating rocks called pumice.

Taupo Volcano and Geothermal Attractions

Craters of the Moon is mostly famous for mountain biking but they also have a nice Geothermal walk around the thermal area. Craters are aptly named, it almost feels like another world up there, full of steam vents and boiling mud. It's also wheelchair accessible and is fine for all abilities.

Orakei Korako or ‘The Hidden Valley’ is 25 minutes north of Taupo, and has been named by Lonely Planet as ‘possibly the best thermal area left in New Zealand, and one of the finest in the world'. It really is a gem. Take a walk around and see silica terraces, boiling pools, geysers and an incredibly rare geothermal cave. Orakei Korako is thousands of years old, and you can almost taste the history!

Wairakei Terraces also has a thermal walkway, and if you really want to dive into some Maori culture, they offer intimate hangi nights set against their amazing volcanic area. They also have hot pools and spa massage facilities if you’re up for a bit of indulgence.

Wairakei Natural Thermal Valley has a thermal walk of thirty minutes. It's only a few dollars and is a nice easy way to see some volcanic activity up close and personal. Pay for a bag of food and feed the animals to.

There’s also the Volcanic Activity Centre which has an earthquake simulator and lots of interactive footage should you want to learn a little more about the inner workings of volcanic activity. Perfect for the kids.

Geothermal and Volcanic Attractions in Turangi Tongariro

Tokaanu Thermal Walk is a free short loop track that provides an interesting glimpse of a natural thermal area. See steaming hot mineral pools set in sinter basins and spluttering mud pools amidst the native bush.
