The Great Lake Taupo region is the perfect place to base yourself if you are planning to ski or snowboard during your holiday or weekend away. Mt Ruapehu has brilliant skiing and snowboarding, with the longest vertical drop in Australasia. Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields are located in a Dual World Heritage Area and have the highest lift access terrain in New Zealand. Whakapapa and Turoa, have a combined area of 1050 hectares, the largest skiable area in New Zealand. There is an excellent variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiers and snowboarders, and dedicated areas for tobogganing and tubing.
Everything you need to have a great day up on the mountain is available in Turangi or Taupo including ski and snowboard rental and tuning, warm weather gear shops (and rental), ski packages including lessons, transport to the resorts and of course a wide range of accommodation options. One of the benefits of staying in Turangi or Taupo for your skiing or snowboarding retreat is there are many alternative things to do if the weather up the mountain is not looking good! From Turangi you are only 40 minutes drive to Whakapapa or 1 hour 20 minutes from Turoa. From Taupo you are 1 hour 20 minutes drive to Whakapapa or 2 hours from Turoa.
