Winter Activities around Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu
Mt Ruapehu has brilliant skiing and snowboarding, with the longest vertical drop in Australasia. Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields are located within the Tongariro National Park, a Dual World Heritage Area, and have the highest lift access terrain in New Zealand.The Great Lake Taupo region is the perfect place to base yourself if you are planning to ski or snowboard during your holiday or weekend away.
Whakapapa and Turoa, have a combined area of 1050 hectares, the largest skiable area in New Zealand. There is an excellent variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiers and snowboarders, and dedicated areas for tobogganing and tubing.
You could also try the Tukino Ski Fields, Mt Ruapehu's lesser-known gem, located on the eastern side of the mountain. Tukino Ski Fields offer the rare combination of adventure minus the crowds. Tukino is a club ski field, operated and maintained by club members.

One of the benefits of staying in Turangi or Taupo for your skiing or snowboarding retreat is there are many alternative things to do if the weather up the mountain is not looking good! From Turangi you are only 40 minutes drive to Whakapapa or 1 hour 20 minutes from Turoa. From Taupo you are 1 hour 20 minutes drive to Whakapapa or 2 hours from Turoa.
