Email to a friend »

The Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand’s premier and largest cycling event where up to 10,000 riders from across New Zealand and over 20 countries around the globe take part each year.

Held on the last Saturday of every November around the pristine and picturesque Lake Taupo, the event will this year celebrate its 38th anniversary on Saturday the 29th of November 2014.

It is well known for its 160km Bike Barn Solo, a one lap circumnavigation of Lake Taupo, but this is just one of 15 event categories on offer, with both Road and Mountain Bike options for individuals and teams, catering to all levels of cycling and fitness abilities.

The Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge sits firmly on the world stage and is recognised as a UCI Golden Bike Event (one of the six best recreational rides in the world), with its Mountain Bike categories taking place on trails which have been awarded Silver Ride Centre status by the International Mountain Bike Association (one of only two in the Southern Hemisphere). The two lap enduro ride, the Barfoot & Thompson Enduro, is also UMCA’s (Ultra-Marathon Cycling Association) 200 mile World Championship Race, with the Barfoot & Thompson Extreme Enduro eight lap category being a qualifying event for Race Across America.

Entries for this year’s Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge are available from 1 July online at where you can also check out everything that this iconic ‘Must Do’ event has to offer including accommodation and training tips.
