Taupo, Turangi & Tongariro Mountain Biking
Waikato River Trail, W2K, Great Lake Trail & more
The Great Lake Taupo region has some of the best mountain bike trails in the world with tracks ranging from gentle to heart pumping. Many of the tracks follow beautiful bush trails, catching glimpses of the lake, rivers and mountains. There are many biking and cycling options for all ranges of fitness, experience and budgets.
Try biking the gullies and walking tracks of town or the pine scented exotic forests close by. For those who need the wilderness thrill, a fabulous volcanic adventure tour down the mountain is a great option. Thrill seekers can try heli-biking on the mountain, whilst the more sedate biker can relax and enjoy a ride through rolling bush tracks in the pine forest.
On the western shores of Lake Taupo is the Great Lake Trail, one of 'Nga Haerenga - The New Zealand Cycle Trail' leading mountain bike tracks. Once complete the Great Lake Trail will offer a multi-day all-weather experience. The free draining pumice soils of the Great Lake Taupo region provide true all weather riding, even in the rain there is very little mud on the track. The views across the lake are stunning, and the native bush surrounding the track is home ot many native species.
A water taxi service has just launched, and offers transfers for both mountain bikers and walkers, from lake edges og the Great Lake Trail to Kinloch, and there are shuttle services operating to the start of each of the tracks within the Great Lake Trail.
The Great Lake Taupo region is already well-known for our many cycling events but a new sculpture has cemented Taupo’s place as one of the top cycling centres in the country. A three-metre-high steel racing Giant Bike was unveiled on 20 September 2012 and is now permanently gracing the top of the Control Gates Hill informing locals and visitors alike that Taupo is a cycling town.
Bike Taupo is a cycling advocacy group who aim to promote cycling as a healthy, environmentally friendly and convenient form of transport and recreation in the Great Lake Taupo region. Visit their website for information about the work they do and other biking tracks within the region.
