New Zealand is an outstanding visitor destination, and there’s no doubt that one of the best ways to explore it is by cycling.
Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail emerged as one of the ideas from the Job Summit in February 2009 and are designed to showcase the very best of our country – our spectacular scenery, unique culture, and first-class Kiwi hospitality.
The trails cater for a range of cycling abilities from beginners and families to more experienced and competitive riders with all sorts of options to stop along the way, head off the beaten track, and experience New Zealand.
Three Great Rides have now been fully completed and opened, including the St James Cycle Trail (Hanmer Springs), the Waikato River Trails and the Dun Mountain Trail (Nelson).
Construction on the remaining Great Rides, including the Great Lake Trail (Taupo) is also well underway with12 of these Great Rides already having sections that are open and in use.

The Great Lake Taupo region has some of the best mountain bike trails in the world with tracks ranging from gentle to heart pumping. Many of the tracks follow beautiful bush trails, catching glimpses of the lake, rivers and mountains. There are many biking and cycling options for all ranges of fitness, experience and budgets.
Try biking the gullies and walking tracks of town or the pine scented exotic forests close by. For those who need the wilderness thrill, a fabulous volcanic adventure tour down the mountain is a great option. Thrill seekers can try heli-biking on the mountain, whilst the more sedate biker can relax and enjoy a ride through rolling bush tracks in the pine forest.
