Tongariro / Taupo Summer Programme 2012 - 2013

Join knowledgeable DOC staff and volunteers and get active in the Tongariro Taupo region this summer. There are activities to suit everyone, but don't delay - their most popular trips book out quickly!

Thursday 27th December
Whio rafting trip
Explore by raft the upper gorge of the Tongariro
River and hear about the Blue Duck Project
Charitable Trust’s success and future plans.
Adult: $110 Youth: $110 Age: 10+ Grade 2


Friday 28th December
Waimarino Wetland kayak
Kayak into Waimarino Wetlands and find out
about the restoration of the area. Stop for a ‘cuppa’
and hopefully spot plenty of birds along the way.
Adult: $75 Youth: $75 Age: 10+ Grade 2

Stanton Memorial
Walk through some very interesting terrain on Mt.
Ruapehu, passing mountain huts and the ski field
area on the way to the memorial.
Adult: $10 Youth: $10 Age: 13+ Grade 4


Saturday 29th December
Rotopounamu bush walk
Close to Turangi, yet hidden from view is the
beautiful jewel of Lake Rotopounamu. Follow a
well-formed track through beautiful native bush.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 10+ Grade 2


Sunday 30th December
The Tongariro River trail
A leisurely three hour guided walk along both
sides of the Tongariro River between Birches (aka
Major Jones) and Red Hut Bridges.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 8+ Grade 2


Tuesday 1st January
Come fly a kite on the Chateau Golf Course at
Whakapapa Village. Great family day to start the
new year! All ages. Sausage sizzle for donations.

Tauranga-Taupo Waterfall
Walk into an area of bush, descending a steep
ridge down to the Tauranga-Taupō Waterfall where
we will have lunch.
Adult: $35 Youth: $N/A Age: 13+ Grade 4


Thursday 3rd January
Kaikawaka Villa mountain bike ride
Ride through the picturesque Landcorp Raurimu
Farm Block into the historic Kaikawaka Villa. This
area is not usually accessible to the general public.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 10+ Grade 2


Friday 4th January
Kids fishing at Tongariro National Trout Centre
Take the kids fishing where they are guaranteed
to catch lunch. Have a picnic after we smoke your

Kiwi in the wild evening trip
Visit Tongariro Forest Kiwi Sanctuary with
our kiwi team and track a kiwi with listening
equipment to hopefully hear them calling.

Saturday 5th January
Kinloch mountain bike ride
Ride the W2K through stunning landscape of
regenerating forest with awesome views across
the lake to the mountains
Adult: $10 Youth: $10 Age: 13+ Grade 3


Pukawa - Omori Conservation Project
Join the Pukawa Wildlife Management Trust as
we walk local bush tracks with trust members
and be inspired at what people-power can do.
Adult: $10 Age: open Grade 1


Sunday 6th January
Rotokawa sulphur mines
Visit this geothermal area not usually accessible
to the public. Find out about plants with hot feet,
mining history and geothermal landscapes.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 10+ Grade 2


Monday 7th January
Waipakihi River heli-hike
An enjoyable day trip involving a helicopter ride,
fantastic scenery and over 30 river crossings!

The valley is truly one of the region’s hidden treasures.
Adult: $130 Youth: $130 Age: 10+ Grade 4
Postponement day - Tuesday 8th January


Karioi Rahui Hikoi
Walk through this ecological restoration project.
Traverse the ancient Rangataua lava flow, visit
Omarae Falls and Lake Rotokura.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 10+ Grade 2


Tuesday 8th January
Wairakei’s front nine
Enjoy a walk around the front nine holes and
learn how this beautiful 180 ha property is being
transformed into a special conservation area.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 10+ Grade 1


Wednesday 9th January
Mangapurua mountain bike ride
Bike the historic Mangapurua Valley, over the
Bridge To Nowhere before descending down to
the Whanganui River and a jet boat ride.
Adult: $130 Youth: $N/A Age: 13+ Grade 3


Meet the native fish of New Zealand
Discover fish with your very own guide taking you
through the Genesis Energy Freshwater Aquarium
and the Tongariro National Trout Centre.

Thursday 10th January
Okupata Caves exploration
A fun-filled morning or afternoon trip for the
family, exploring fantastic caves. See glow worms,
limestone formations and maybe even cave weta.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 6+ Grade 2


Friday 11th January
Kaimanawa wild horses
Take this rare opportunity for a guided trip to
spectacular wild horse country. Not normally open
to the public, this is a highlight of the programme.

Saturday 12th January
From Te Maari to Tangiwai
A day tour with a chance to view and discuss
recent activity from new vents on Mt Tongariro
and hear more about Mt Ruapehu’s mudflows.
Adult: $10 Youth: $5 Age: 10+ Grade 2


Sunday 13th January
Ohakune Old Coach Road historic walk
Take a walk back in time and discover the oldest
track in the park, from Horopito to Ohakune.
A must for railway buffs!

Saturday 26th January
Tussock Traverse
A challenging event across Tongariro National
Park, 27 km on foot from Tukino over the
saddle past Tama Lakes to Whakapapa Village.

Trip grades

Grade 5: Strenuous. Requires a high level of fitness. Involves hours off-trail on very rough terrain.
Grade 4: Hard. Requires a high level of fitness. May involve river crossings, long hours tramping off formed tracks.
Grade 3: Medium. Requires above-average fitness. May involve walking off-track over rough terrain.
Grade 2: Easy. Suitable for people with average fitness and reasonable health.
Grade 1: Easy. Average fitness/reasonable health required.
