Situated in the heart of the North Island in the Great Lake Taupo region, Mangakino borders the western shores of Lake Maraetai on the Waikato River. Surrounded by lakes, forest and farmland, Mangakino is a perfect all-round destination; great for those who seek peace and tranquillity and also catering to the more adventurous who enjoy outdoor pursuits and activities like biking, boating, kayaking, wakeboarding, fishing and hiking.
Take a ride on the fabulous Otunui Paddleboat which offers lake and river cruises for up to 40 people from the Mangakino Lakefront Reserve. Enjoy some breaktaking scenery as the paddleboat travels on Lake Maraetai, the Waikato River Gorge and the Mangakino Stream.
The Waikato River Trails is perfect for the mountain biking and tramping enthusiasts or for those seeking a leisurely stroll through beautiful native bush.
Mangakino and Whakamaru have beautifully scenic lakes on offer, a result of the Hydro Dams which themselves are spectacular structures to see. The lakes are a popular venue for jet boating, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking and other water activities.
Campers will be happy to know that there is free lakeside camping at the Mangakino Recreation Reserve, located in Mangakino township on the edge of Lake Maraetai at the end of Lake Road.
Pureora Forest Park is located close by and boasts many features; a number of impressive bush walks. You can stand on the centre of the North Island and also visit New Zealand’s largest Totara Tree.
Mangakino (also known as Mango by the locals) is a great location from which to base your holiday, as nearby holiday attractions in Taupo, Turangi & Tongariro and Tongariro National Park are less than an hour away.
