Botanical Reserve
Waipahihi Botanical Garden
An amazing garden built with love. The reserve can be accessed from Shepherds Road in Taupō. Situated high on a hill, Waipahihi Botanical Reserve has spectacular views over Lake Taupō to the mountains of the Tongariro National Park. The free reserve was established in 1966 and is filled with native trees and plants; developed and beautifully maintained by dedicated volunteers. The reserve's society has a membership of approximately 400 and every week up to 30 volunteers spend two or three hours tending to the extensive gardens.
Waipahihi Botanical Reserve has 35 hectares of attractive gardens including a wonderful alpine garden, the lemonwood walk and 2,000 rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias that are a blaze of colour every spring. The wonderful plantings of native trees have become a refuge for several species of native bird. The yellow flowered kowhai tree is a favorite source of nectar for one of New Zealand's common songbirds, the tui. A great place to walk your best friend!
