Quite mixed results for the boaties out on the lake this week, we have had some nice spring like weather and calm conditions but the fish have been hard to find for many anglers. This is not unusual for this time of year and those that have been successful are finding that correct depth and staying on the move is more important than lure choice.
The early birds that are up at the crack of dawn for a morning harl have been the only people that are still consistently catching fish on the lake at the moment and reports are that some very nice conditioned fish are still being caught . The same small sized Green Orbit or Yellow bodied Taupo Tiger are still doing the damage for the harlers fishing one to one and a half colours of lead and zig zagging the drop offs .
Fly fishing continues to be steady with good numbers of fish in most rivers now with a mixture of spent, spawning and recovering fish with the odd smattering of fresh fish still coming through the system on a fresh, this weekend look s to have rain from late Saturday through to Monday no indication as to how much at this stage but it’s certainly going to be worth a look out there.
The recent heavy rains have changed some of the local rivers quite significantly, this all adds to the challenge and excitement of finding new lies and hidey holes to explore.
Once again you would be hard pressed to say one river was performing any better than another, they all still continue to be fish well,
The river mouths have been having some very varied results, no real pattern to it at the moment, you just need to be out there giving it a go, some nights it’s all on, and others very quiet you just have to be “Johnny on the spot” and try your luck.
I have just been over to Europe for a spot of summer dry fly fishing over there and I can tell you we don’t know how lucky we are to have so much fantastic fishing on our doorstep and for what we pay compared to the Europeans is mind blowing! We are truly lucky to have such an outstanding fishery here and one that we should never take for granted.
Tight lines all till next week
