Taupo Fishing Report 20th May

Big rains this week including some very powerful Westerly winds have put another good pulse of fresh fish into the local Taupo rivers.

Practically every local river is on fire with fish today, some of the best fly fishing witnessed for many years is happening right now!!! Everyone we have spoken to has reports of big numbers and stories of big trout landed and as usual bigger ones lost!!!

Lots of fish in the 5-6lb bracket being caught from all the local Eastern side rivers quite few reports every day of Browns and Rainbows in the 7-8lb bracket ! Just awesome news and so early in to the winter season.

As noted in last week's fly fishing report, most of the rivers have been quite coloured over the last few days but this weekend looks set to be a cracker !!!

This truly is world class winter fly fishing like I have never witnessed before and all with the beautiful snow covered mountains surrounding the Taupo area.

Backcountry rivers are still open till the end of the month and up until the last rains were producing some good back end Mayfly hatches.  We have uploaded our latest fly fishing tutorial on how to catch trout on stillwaters using Damselfly techniques.

Tight Lines everyone.

Ask the Expert

  • Q. How many trout can I catch a day?

You can catch as many as you can but you can only bring in 3 and they must be at least 40cm.
